Dr. Hamidreza Mahoozi, FEBTS, FCCP
Chief physician
Specialist in general surgery and thoracic surgery, e.g. lymphology and emergency medicine.
A life for modern surgery and patient-friendly treatment methods
Dr. Hamidreza Mahoozi is a renowned specialist with over two decades of experience in general and thoracic surgery and lymphology. His career has been characterized by a continuous pursuit of excellence in patient care, innovative treatment methods and training the next generation of physicians. Today, he heads the VenaZiel Vein Competence Center (VKZ) as well as the Proctology and Hernia Center in Berlin – facilities that are characterized by the highest treatment standards and state-of-the-art therapy concepts.

Training and professional specialization
Dr. Mahoozi began his medical training at Bonn University Hospital in the Department of General, Visceral, Vascular and Thoracic Surgery under the direction of Professor Dr. Andreas Hirner. It was here that he laid the foundations for his surgical expertise. His particular interest in complex surgical disciplines then led him to the Heart and Diabetes Center (HDZ) NRW in Bad Oeynhausen, where he acquired in-depth knowledge of cardiac and thoracic surgery under two leading figures in cardiac surgery – Professor Dr. Rainer Körfer and Professor Dr. Jan Gummert.
He deepened his specialization at the Thoraxzentrum Ruhrgebiet under the direction of Dr. Erich Hecker. There he gained further qualifications and was awarded the internationally recognized titles Fellow of the European Board of Thoracic Surgery (FEBTS) and Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians (FCCP) was awarded. He also has additional qualifications in emergency medicine and lymphology and is one of the leading experts for venous diseases in Germany today.
Clinical career and management responsibility
In 2017, Dr. Mahoozi took over the position of Chief Physician for Thoracic Surgery at the Regio Kliniken in Pinneberg and established the Department of Thoracic Surgery there and in Elmshorn. Under his leadership, the department developed into one of the leading centers for thoracic surgery in northern Germany. A particular focus of his work was on minimally invasive thoracic surgery, especially uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). This modern surgical procedure enables particularly gentle interventions with shorter recovery times for patients.
Dr. Mahoozi performed numerous procedures using the so-called non-intubated uniportal technique operations on the lungs without a general anaesthetic, which only require an incision around two centimetres long. In 2021, around 20% of all thoracic surgical procedures were performed under his direction using this particularly gentle technique. Another milestone was the first successful uniportal subxyphoid thymectomy performed nationwide, which attracted a great deal of attention both in specialist circles and publicly.

VenaZiel Berlin – Center for modern vein medicine, proctology and hernia surgery
Dr. Mahoozi opened a new chapter in his career with the founding of the VenaZiel Vein Competence Center in Berlin. Today, VenaZiel is a certified Vein Competence Center (VKZ) and an official hospitation center for the VenaSeal method – an innovative procedure in which diseased veins are closed using a minimally invasive medical adhesive. Doctors from all over Europe regularly visit the center to learn this technique (registration via Medtronic, possible three times a year).
In addition to the VenaSeal method, the center offers other modern treatment options such as radiofrequency ablation (RFA), endovenous laser therapy (EVLA) and specialized proctological procedures – such as the Rafaelo method and modern laser treatments. The VenaZiel branch in Berlin Checkpoint Charlie will also be operating a specialized hernia center from 1 May 2025. All treatments are based on the principles of minimally invasive, patient-friendly and effective.
Commitment to innovation and patient-friendly surgery
Dr. Mahoozi stands for a contemporary, holistic and scientifically sound approach to treatment. His many years of experience and enthusiasm for minimally invasive techniques have made a significant contribution to making surgical procedures in both thoracic surgery and vein medicine significantly less invasive for many patients. His aim is to transfer the latest scientific findings into daily practice with the utmost clinical precision – always with a focus on the best possible outcome for the individual patient.

Training and knowledge transfer
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Mahoozi is intensively involved in medical training and further education. He trains colleagues in modern surgical techniques and is a sought-after speaker at national and international specialist congresses. His lectures, including at the annual conference of the German Society for Phlebology, demonstrate his ability to convey complex topics in a practical and clear manner.
Visions for the future
With the construction of three class 1b operating theatres in the new VenaZiel branch at Checkpoint Charlie (Charlottenstrasse 13, 10969 Berlin), Dr. Mahoozi is laying the foundations for a new era in outpatient surgery. His aim is to be able to perform even more procedures safely, efficiently and close to home on an outpatient basis in future through the targeted use of state-of-the-art medical technology – including telemedicine.

Dr. Hamidreza Mahoozi combines medical excellence with human care. His patients appreciate not only his professional expertise, but also his empathetic, understandable communication. With VenaZiel, he has not only created an innovative treatment center, but also a place of exchange, further development and knowledge – for patients and colleagues alike.
