Recognizing a hernia: Symptoms & causes
A hernia, also known as a “hernia”, occurs when tissue escapes through a weak point in the abdominal wall. It often manifests itself as:
- A visible protrusion
- Pain or feeling of pressure
- Discomfort when coughing, lifting or pressing
The most common types of hernia:
Inguinal hernia usually occurs in men and is noticeable in the groin area.
Typical symptoms:
Visible or palpable protrusion in the groin
Drawing or stabbing pain, especially when coughing or lifting
Feeling of pressure or burning in the groin area
Pain that can radiate to the testicles or thighs
An umbilical hernia appears as a bump on or around the navel and often affects adults after pregnancy or if they are overweight.
Typical symptoms:
Soft protrusion in the navel area
Feeling of pressure or pain when coughing, sneezing or pressing
Increasing discomfort during physical exertion
Visible change when standing or laughing
The femoral hernia occurs below the groin and mainly affects women.
Typical symptoms:
Deep bump on the inside of the thigh
Pain when walking or standing for long periods
Pressure or pulling sensation in the thigh area
Often unnoticed for a long time – with a sudden risk of entrapment
In a diaphragmatic hernia, part of the stomach moves through a gap in the diaphragm into the chest cavity. This type of hernia often goes unnoticed. However, it can lead to permanent pain in the upper abdomen. It should therefore be checked out by a doctor. This applies in particular to persistent heartburn or reflux.
Typical symptoms:
Heartburn and acid regurgitation (especially when lying down)
Feeling of pressure or pain behind the breastbone
Feeling of fullness after eating
Coughing or hoarseness due to reflux
Nausea or breathing difficulties with larger hernias
An incisional hernia forms in the area of a previous surgical scar.
Typical symptoms:
Protrusion along an abdominal surgery scar
Pain or pulling when standing up or coughing
Feeling of instability in the abdominal area
Hernia often increases gradually

Our advantages at a glance:
Hernia surgery methods at a glance
At the VenaZiel Hernia Center Berlin, we offer modern, minimally invasive procedures for the treatment of inguinal hernia, umbilical hernia, femoral hernia and other types of hernia. Depending on the findings and personal requirements, we use the following surgical methods:
TAPP method (laparoscopic inguinal hernia surgery)
With the TAPP method, we operate via small incisions in the abdomen. Using a camera and fine instruments, we attach a mesh to the hernia site.
Advantages:
Barely visible scars
Less pain after the operation
Ideal for bilateral or recurring fractures
Short healing time
TEP method (without opening the abdominal cavity)
This technique is similar to TAPP, but the abdominal cavity is not entered. The mesh is inserted outside the peritoneum.
Suitable for:
Patients without previous abdominal surgery
Lower risk of adhesions
Open surgery with mesh (Lichtenstein method)
Here, the hernia is operated on via a small incision directly at the groin. A mesh is sewn in from the outside.
Particularly suitable for:
Elderly patients
If general anesthesia is not possible
Outpatient under local anesthesia
