Hair, dead skin cells, and dirt accumulate in a small cavity under the skin; the body treats them as foreign bodies. The Latin name <i>Sinus pilonidalis<\/i> translates to &#8220;hair nest cavity&#8221; \u2014 and thus names the cause.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"p\">Which treatment is suitable depends less on how uncomfortable it feels, and more on which of these three courses you are currently experiencing.<\/p>\n<div class=\"vz-cards\">\n<div class=\"vz-card\">\n<h3>Without symptoms<\/h3>\n<p>One or more small pits in the gluteal fold, nothing else. Often an incidental finding. Immediate surgery is not necessary here \u2014 waiting, removing hair, and keeping the fold dry is a legitimate first approach.  <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"vz-card\">\n<h3>Acute Abscess<\/h3>\n<p>A reddened, warm swelling that grows larger and significantly more painful within days. Sitting becomes agony. This is the urgent course \u2014 here, relief counts, not planning.  <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"vz-card\">\n<h3>Chronic Course<\/h3>\n<p>Repeated small amounts of secretion or pus from one or more openings, with quieter weeks in between. The inflammation remains active in the tissue.
