Training and specialization

Dr. Mahoozi began his medical training at the University Hospital Bonn in the Department of General, Visceral, Vascular, and Thoracic Surgery under the direction of Professor Dr. Andreas Hirner. Here, he laid the foundation for his surgical expertise. His particular interest in complex surgical disciplines subsequently led him to the Heart and Diabetes Center (HDZ) NRW in Bad Oeynhausen, where he acquired in-depth knowledge of cardiac and thoracic surgery under two prominent figures in cardiac surgery – Professor Dr. Rainer Körfer and Professor Dr. Jan Gummert.

He deepened his specialization at the Thoraxzentrum Ruhrgebiet under the direction of Dr. med. Erich Hecker. There, he further qualified and was awarded the internationally recognized titles of Fellow of the European Board of Thoracic Surgery (FEBTS) and Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians (FCCP). In addition, he holds additional qualifications in emergency medicine and lymphology and is now one of the leading experts in venous diseases.

Clinical career and management responsibility

In 2017, Dr. Mahoozi took over the position of Chief Physician for Thoracic Surgery at the Regio Kliniken in Pinneberg, where he established the Department of Thoracic Surgery in Pinneberg and Elmshorn. Under his leadership, the department developed into one of the leading centers for thoracic surgery in Northern Germany. A particular focus of his work was on minimally invasive thoracic surgery, especially uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopy (VATS). This modern surgical procedure enables particularly gentle procedures with shorter recovery times for patients.

Dr. Mahoozi performed numerous procedures using the so-called non-intubated uniportal technique – operations on the lungs without general anesthesia, requiring only an approximately two-centimeter-long incision. In 2021, approximately 20% of all thoracic surgical procedures under his direction were performed using this particularly gentle technique. Another milestone was the first nationwide successfully performed uniportal subxyphoid thymectomy, which received great attention both in professional circles and in public.

VenaZiel Berlin – Center for modern vein medicine, proctology and hernia surgery

With the founding of the VenaZiel Vein Competence Center in Berlin, Dr. Mahoozi opened a new chapter in his career. Today, VenaZiel is a certified Vein Competence Center (VKZ) as well as an official training center for the VenaSeal method – an innovative procedure in which diseased veins are minimally invasively sealed with a medical adhesive. Physicians from all over Europe regularly visit the center as part of preceptorships to learn this technique (registration via Medtronic, possible three times a year).

Since April 1, 2025, Dr. Hamidreza Mahoozi and his team have been the largest users of the VenaSeal™ catheter in Europe. This leading position underlines its extensive experience and the high level of confidence in its expertise in the field of minimally invasive vein therapy.

In addition to the VenaSeal method, the center offers other modern treatment options such as radiofrequency ablation (RFA), endovenous laser therapy (EVLA), as well as specialized proctological procedures – such as the Rafaelo method and modern laser treatments. A specialized hernia center will also be operated at the VenaZiel branch in Berlin Checkpoint Charlie from May 1, 2025. All therapies are based on the principles: minimally invasive, patient-friendly, and effective.

Commitment to innovation and patient-friendly surgery

Dr. Mahoozi stands for a contemporary, holistic, and scientifically sound treatment approach. His many years of experience and enthusiasm for minimally invasive techniques have significantly contributed to making surgical procedures in both thoracic surgery and vein medicine much gentler for many patients.

His aim is to transfer the latest scientific findings into daily practice with the highest clinical precision – always with a focus on the best possible outcome for the individual.

Vision of Dr. Hamidreza Mahoozi

“The future of medicine is ambulatory, robotic, digital – and deeply human.”

Modern medicine is facing a profound transformation. New technologies, individualized therapies, and a growing awareness of prevention are opening up opportunities that were unthinkable just a few years ago. Dr. Hamidreza Mahoozi – specialist in general surgery, thoracic surgery, lymphology, and founder of VenaZiel – pursues a clear vision: State-of-the-art medicine should be accessible, gentle, precise, and humane for everyone.

Rethinking robotic surgery: next-generation outpatient robotic centers!

With the planning for the introduction of the first outpatient robot center with Da Vinci SP technology in Berlin, Dr. Mahoozi wants to set a milestone. But that’s just the beginning:

In the near future, specialized outpatient robotic centers will play a central role in surgical care. These centers are independent of classic hospital structures and enable a completely new form of collaboration:

Experienced surgeons will travel to these high-tech centers to perform minimally invasive procedures with the utmost precision.

The focus is on the Da Vinci SP (Single Port) system – a groundbreaking technology that allows even complex procedures to be performed through a single access point. With this method, operations on sensitive anatomical regions – such as the groin, pelvis, abdomen, thorax, or even the diaphragm – can be performed particularly gently, almost scar-free, and with the shortest possible recovery time.

The advantages of this new form of care:

  • Performing even complex procedures on an outpatient basis
  • Less pain, lower risk, faster mobilization
  • Maximum precision and ergonomics for surgeons
  • Optimal use of resources through centralized technology centers
  • More time and attention for the patient

Artificial intelligence & digitalization as a quiet revolution in the background

In addition to robotics, Dr Mahoozi sees digitalization and artificial intelligence (AI) as key components of the future:

  • AI-supported diagnostics will help to detect diseases such as vascular changes, tumors or chronic inflammatory processes earlier and more accurately.
  • Digital patient management enables efficient processes – from online appointments to structured aftercare.
  • Telemedical second opinions connect patients with specialists worldwide – quickly, securely and regardless of where they live.
  • AI-based assistance systems will support doctors in therapy decisions, surgical planning and risk assessments – without replacing the human factor.

“Technology should not be an end in itself – it should help us to get closer to people again.” – Dr. Hamidreza Mahoozi

Prevention: The most important medicine is the one that prevents illness

As forward-looking as modern surgical methods may be – the most important step often takes place before the disease occurs. That is why prevention plays a central role in Dr. Mahoozi’s vision:

  • Development of a digital check-up program for the early detection of vascular, metabolic and tumor diseases
  • Integration of gene-based diagnostics for risk assessment and therapy individualization
  • Promotion of a preventive lifestyle through evidence-based recommendations on nutrition, exercise, stress management and sleep
  • Use of intelligent systems for continuous health monitoring via wearables, apps and AI analysis

The future of medicine lies not only in high-end technology, but also in a deep understanding of people – physically, emotionally and socially.

VenaZiel as a model for the medicine of tomorrow

Dr. Mahoozi sees VenaZiel not only as a medical center, but also as a future platform for a new type of care:

  • State-of-the-art, interdisciplinary centers with a focus on phlebology, proctology, hernia surgery, thoracic surgery and robotic surgery
  • Outpatient operations at hospital level with state-of-the-art technology
  • Networked care through digitalization, AI and telemedicine
  • Individual support with time, empathy and education

“I believe in medicine that not only heals, but also understands. In care that is not only technically perfect, but remains human. And in a future in which we as doctors no longer just fight diseases – but shape health. We live this vision at VenaZiel – a little more every day.”

– Dr. Hamidreza Mahoozi
