Lipedema: quick answers
How do I recognize lipedema?
PRÜFEN Typical signs are a symmetrical increase in fat on the legs and hips, sometimes also on the arms, while the hands and feet stay slim. The affected areas are often tender to pressure and painful, and bruises appear even after light knocks.
Is lipedema the same as being overweight?
PRÜFEN No. Lipedema is a distinct disease of the fatty tissue and is not caused by eating too much or moving too little. That is why diet and exercise hardly reduce the fat deposits.
What is the difference between lipedema and lymphedema?
PRÜFEN In lymphedema, lymphatic fluid builds up in the tissue, and the feet often swell as well. Lipedema is a disease of the fatty tissue under the skin: it affects both sides equally, and the hands and feet stay slim.
How is lipedema diagnosed?
PRÜFEN Through a detailed consultation with a doctor and a careful physical examination, because there is no laboratory test for lipedema. Ultrasound or other imaging is needed only in certain cases, usually to rule out other conditions.
Does health insurance cover the costs?
PRÜFEN Whether your health insurance covers the cost of liposuction depends on your insurance and on the findings. We discuss this with you after the examination.
